Aug 15, 2024Ah successfully gardening in shade....turns out getting plants to grow and thrive in shaded spots is one of the biggest problems Australian gardeners face! So I decided to create a 7 part video series filled with tips on gardening in shade and shade garden ideas.

DEEP SHADE or FULL SHADE
These areas have zero sunlight, if any at all directly hitting the plants. They might be on the south side of your house, up against the south side of a wall or beneath evergreen trees.
DAPPLED SHADE or LIGHT SHADE
These areas receive filtered light. It could be through the leaves of a tree or light that's filtered through a pergola or trellis.
This light is softer and more gentle. It's perfect for plants that prefer a gentle or indirect light.
PART SHADE
This one can be tricky! It's a spot that gets a total of 4-6 hours of sunlight throughout the day.
It could be morning sun and afternoon shade OR morning shade and afternoon sun. And sometimes just to really make things hard - a mix of both - generally speaking though it will be more of one or the other.
Morning sun is softer and more gentle than afternoon sun, so knowing what sort of SUN your part shade spot gets is important for plant selection!
But what about DRY SHADE? Oh that's a whole different type of shade so I'll dedicate the NEXT blog post to it alone!
